Our Process

From First Call to Final Cleanup

  1. 01

    Look at the stump

We measure the stump, examine the wood hardness, note any underground utility concerns, and figure out how we're getting the grinder in.

  2. 02

    Call 811

Before all grinding, we have the underground utilities located and marked — gas, water, electric, cable.

  3. 03

    Grind it out

The commercial grinder handles the stump and the main surface roots 8-12 inches below grade, past where regrowth can happen.

  4. 04

    Backfill and clean

We fill the hole with the wood chips from grinding, rake the area, and let you recognize what to expect for settling.

Questions Answered

Stump Grinding FAQ

How far down do you actually grind?
8 to 12 inches below the soil surface as our typical. That's deep enough to stop regrowth and let you set sod down correct away. If you're planning to plant a new tree in the exact same spot, let us understand and we'll go deeper and pull out more root material so the fresh tree has neat ground to work with.
Shall a stump actually draw termites?
Yes — rotting wood is a primary food for subterranean termites, and North Texas has plenty of them. A stump left to decay close to your house is a direct path for a colony to get longtime and eventually move toward the foundation. Grinding the stump ends that.
What happens to all the wood chips?
They go back in the grinding hole as mulch. If there's added, we can spread it in your beds or haul it off — whatever you want. The chips settle over the initial few months, so we typically recommend topping with soil following that.
Should I grind the stump right post removal or wait?
Sooner is better. A fresh stump grinds a little easier than one that's dried and hardened, and it's less time for termites to locate it. That said, there's no real deadline — we grind plenty of stumps that have been sitting for decades.
Is grinding going to tear up my lawn?
We preserve the impact tight — generally the disturbed locale is 6 to 12 inches beyond the edge of the stump. We safeguard adjacent plantings and hardscape, and any turf that does obtain scuffed generally bounces back in a few weeks.
Do you cut us a deal for multiple stumps?
Yes. One visit, various stumps, one setup — it's more efficient for us, so we pass the savings along. The per-stump cost drops with each additional stump. Dispatch us the list and we'll quote it.
About This Service

More About Stump Grinding

Once the tree is gone, the stump is what's left — and it's a nuisance at top and a foundation-hazard at worst. Mansfield Tree Trimming does stump grinding around Mansfield and the surrounding DFW cities, tackling stumps well below grade so you can set sod down, replant, or just stop mowing near it. North Texas stumps are difficult project. Post oak and live oak stumps, grown slow in our blackland prairie clay, have dense wood that chews up grinding teeth. Pecan stumps can push 36 inches throughout with surface roots spidering out in all direction. Cedar elms and hackberries are softer but sit in clay that dulls edges almost as fast. Our commercial grinders are built for it — we go 8 to 12 inches below the soil line so there's no regrowth, and we grind out the visible surface roots so the region comes out level. The grindings go back in the hole as mulch, and we can top with soil to match the rest of the grade. Leaving a stump in the ground in this climate is asking for termites — our warm humid summers rot the wood fast, and subterranean termite colonies love a complimentary food source. Once they're longtime, they don't stay in the stump. Grinding kills that danger and gets your yard back in one visit.
